Forever Wild Animal Rehabilitation Center, Tucson, AZ
A week or so ago, my local Unschooling group had the opportunity to have Darleen from Forever Wild come and talk to our group. She met us at a local park and brought a rehabilitated barn owl named Elmira for us to meet. Her talk was interesting and informative and the perfect thing for us to hear before dissecting owl pellets.
Forever Wild is an amazing place — they give tours, too (call ahead). They are the only place I’ve ever seen that takes in wild animals who have been injured in some way (usually by domesticated dogs or cats), rehabilitates them, and then sets them wild. They do this with thousands of animals every year. Since they are a non-profit, they are always accepting donations of time and supplies. Consider this center when making your donations for the year.
We purchased our owl pellets from Owl Brand Discovery Kits. There are many places to buy these online, but we were really happy with all the additional resources this site had (as well as the group discount).
What is an owl pellet? An owl pellet is the clump of regurgitated parts that an owl doesn’t digest. Click here for more information.
Here are a few photographs of Elmira (and Darleen), and then some of our owl pellet fun:
