La Brea Tar Pits
With my family’s love of the history of the Earth, we just had to go to the La Brea Tar Pits on our recent trip to the greater Los Angeles area. Homeschooling “teachers” can visit the museum free of charge! We spent that money in the gift shop.
We were fascinated by the active tar pits in the park area (including ones that people could easily step into if they weren’t being careful — as can be seen in the last photo in this post) and the photographs of the history of the tar pits. Also interesting was watching the workers in action in their “fishbowl laboratory”. As the museum kept emphasizing, no dinosaurs have been found in these tar pits — the tar pits were created after the dinosaurs were extinct. However, thousands of species of animals and plants have been found there. It’s amazing! The only thing slowing them down from finding more and more is funding…
