VEGAN RECIPE: The BEST Carrot Cake Ever (Guest Post)

Carrot cake is my absolute favorite kind of cake.  Problem is, I’ve only had one great one since I became vegan (although I’ve tried a bunch).  So, as a birthday surprise my daughters and husband made me a homemade carrot cake.  It was, by far, the best carrot cake I’ve ever tasted.  It is dense [...]

Happy World Vegan Day & Our Vegan Halloween Candy 2008 Report

Hip-Hip-Hooray TODAY is World Vegan Day! What does this mean? That you should go vegan for at least this day. Go ahead, make me happy - do it! I did it as a short-term trial and I’ve never looked back!
We had a very enjoyable Halloween yesterday. Since my Halloween post last [...]

VEGAN RECIPE: Runza Hot Pockets

A delicious and hearty recipe for home or on-the-go food is runzas.  These are originally made with ground beef.  As vegans, we go without the animal.  Here’s our veganized version of this classic recipe.
Lisa’s Lowfat Vegan Runzas:

3 packages Morningstar Vegetable Crumbles (TVP and/or Boca brand work great, too)
1 whole head organic cabbage
salt
pepper
uncooked bread dough - [...]

Guest Vegan Recipe: Enchilada Casserole

My 12 year old daughter came up with (and made) these recipes on her own. She even took the photos. It is similar to my Mexican Lasagna Casserole, but different.

Zoë’s Enchilada Casserole Version 1:

Green chili peppers - two flat layers
Corn tortillas - one layer
Vegan Nacho cheese - one layer
Boca Chicken-less patties cut into [...]

REVIEW: Steve Pavlina’s “Personal Development for SMART PEOPLE”

I first heard of Steve Pavlina about five years ago. While I’d been a vegan for a few months (and vegetarian for quite a while before that), my children were just starting to explore this lifestyle (they have been vegetarian their whole lives and vegan for the past several years). So, I was [...]

Vegan Recipe: Harvest Casserole (a.k.a. New Butternut Squash Casserole)

I love butternut squash. It tastes even better with pasta and vegan cheddar and pecans. Yum! I posted a delicious Butternut Squash Recipe last year (click to see). I recently updated my recipe to be slightly different (both are quite delicious).  Either would be a wonderful addition to any of your upcoming [...]

Vegan Recipe: Maid-Rite and Cheese Covered Fries (a.k.a. Volcano)

When a vegan gets a craving that involves non-vegan food, what should she do? Well… The other day, my daughters and I were talking about grandparents and one thing led to another and I was recalling a time when my mom and my mom’s dad (my Grandpa) and I went out to eat [...]

Vegan Recipe: Chocolate Turtles

My favorite desserts are chocolate turtles and pecan pie. While I’ve yet to eat a vegan pecan pie that truly satisfies me, I’ve had several different turtle recipes (from restaurants) that I’ve adored even more than the original non-vegan version that I first fell for.  So, my daughters and I set out to make [...]

Obtrusive Smells

I’ve been to a lot of places recently where I’ve had to turn around and walk out. The cause? Smells. Obtrusive smells. Smells that linger in the air long after the cause is gone. I shudder just thinking about it.
It’s one thing for a bath store to smell flowery or for [...]

Discovery Cube Science Center, Orange County, CA

After a recent Disneyland trip, my family and I checked out the Discovery Science Center (nicknamed “The Cube”) just a few miles away.  We immediately knew we’d found it when we spotted a large upended three dimensional black cube on the road.  The cube is mostly decorative, but also has solar panels and fiber optics [...]
