Do Education Right

"Learning to parent feels to me like a time-lapse photo of a flower blooming - you keep thinking it is almost done but there is more. If you froze the frame it would be a flower - but there is all this potential still 'ungrown'." --- Pam Sorooshian

Unschooling Resources

In deciding to live an unschooling life, we have made the decision to honor our children's interests as much as we honor our own. It is our responsibility to open the world to them. In today's world we are blessed as to be parenting in this amazing age of the internet. Two of our biggest homeschooling tools are Google and Wikipedia. If answers to questions cannot be found with these resources, it is a rare find. When our children ask us questions, we are able to sit down instantaneously and find the answers to their questions (and a whole lot more) within seconds, minutes at the most. The whole world is at our fingertips. We are so fortunate!

Some people, especially many traditional homeschoolers, hide the world from their children and shelter them from the world. Yes, our children need our guidance and support, but we choose to open the world up to them. The internet is the safest place in the world to do this -- instant information in the comfort and security of our home. We use the same approach with our nine year old now as we did when she was first starting to walk. She asked for our help with pulling to a stand, she held our hands until she was ready to let go, and we were right there ready to catch her when she wanted us to and to let her explore on her own when she wanted that. Our arms are a little longer now and her desires are bigger; we are growing together as a team. She grabs us when she needs us and she runs when she doesn't. We are thankful every day for the opportunity to parent our wonderful children.

How do we know that we are doing best by these children of ours? We evaluate our lives daily, moment to moment. Since we are so in tune with our children, their upbringing needs are self evident.

"'How can I connect with my children today, bring joy into their lives, expand their worlds, nurture and encourage what they love to do?' That's my guideline. That and the dear hearts of my dear children." --- Anne Ohman
