Family Rituals and Fun Activities
My family and I have come up with a variety of family rituals, yearly celebrations and fun activities that we like to do. Here are some of our family holidays that we celebrate yearly.
Chinese New Year
No, we aren't Chinese, Chinese American, or even have any Chinese ancestors that we know of. However, we can't pass up such a wonderful opportunity to have a family party. Every Chinese New Year, we order
about three times too much Chinese food and we eat Chinese food for days.
February 2nd is Groundhog Day
Every year on Groundhog Day, we watch the classic Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day. We try to collect the various food items that are mentioned in the movie and enjoy eating them during the movie. Some
mentioned are: donuts, flapjacks, fudge, and rocky road ice cream. And, of course, we never eat white chocolate on Groundhog Day.
March 14th is Pi Day
We celebrate Pi Day every year by making at least three different kinds of pie, usually more. Perpetual favorites are vegan pumpkin pie, vegan strawberry pie, vegan chicken-less pie. We try and make at least one desert pie for each of us. The pies last several days and help remind us of Pi.
March 20th is National Meat-Out Day
Easter
The year that I was pregnant with our oldest daughter, I couldn't stand the thought of eating due to my all day nausea. My husband and I went on a long walk and by the time that I was ready to go home, I was also starving. Cooking didn't appeal to either of us, so we went out to eat. Since it was Easter Day, the only restaurant that we could find open in our then town was a local Chinese food restaurant. The tradition stuck and we eat Chinese food for Easter every year.
May 5th is Cinco de Mayo
No, we aren't Mexican, either, but we love Cinco de Mayo. Living in the Southwest we have the privilege of living in an area with a large Hispanic population. We have enjoyed this a lot. Every Cinco de Mayo we celebrate the local Hispanic culture and we go out for Mexican food. Our daughters wear Mexican dresses that we got in Mexico and we have a lot of fun.
November 1st is World Vegan Day
We try and share a wonderful homemade vegetarian meal with another family on this day.
Here are some more holidays around the world.
