As I’ve recently posted about, my Always Unschooled 12 year old recently turned 12. For her birthday, we planned the whole day around her and what she wanted to do (we actually do this often, but somehow birthdays are extra special). She wanted a surprise (to the guests) Chinese New Year’s birthday party, yummy take-out [...]

My Girl Scout troop has been doing a lot of art related projects recently. In honor of that and in order to be inspired to try a few new types of art, we recently visited several art galleries. The overall favorite was the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun, located in northern Tucson, Arizona. This gallery [...]

My family and I recently went on a tour at the Titan Missile Museum in Sahuarita, Arizona (south of Tucson). While close to us and very interesting, we are especially thrilled that Star Trek – First Contact was partially filmed at the missile site. Here are some photographs of our experience. We didn’t get to [...]

It’s officially prickly pear fruit harvesting season here in southern Arizona. Our prickly pears, a.k.a. tuna (Yes, Tuna!), are beautifully ripe. Some are even falling off their pads. We’ve been surprised at the various colors of the fruit – we especially like the bright red ones that look almost like radishes. Today’s post shows photographs [...]

This is my third post on this topic. Click here for the first, and here for the second (this one has photos of my older daughter’s hair donations). Earlier this week my 7.75 year old daughter, Teagan, decided to donate her long hair to Locks of Love. Here are some before and after shots. She [...]

Sounds ominous, doesn’t it? I was hanging out in my older daughter’s room earlier this week and we took a minute to look outside (around 3:00PM local time, for those interested). Immediately, I saw a really long snake crossing our driveway with a little bird trying to catch its tail. We then saw several whip-tailed [...]

We recently checked out the Prehistoric Dig event at the Tucson Botanical Gardens. It is a very nice garden and my family enjoys the different special exhibits the garden displays. Here are a few photographs of our recent visit. Our quick review: It is a very nice (but small) garden and the prehistoric displays are [...]

My family and I live on an acreage south of Tucson, Arizona. We are fortunate enough to have land with many mature saguaros (as evidenced by many of my photographs on this site). We’ve owned our land for four years and we’ve lived on it for slightly over two. In those years, we’ve never quite [...]

For Task 3 in our Harry Potter class Triwizard Tournament, we decided to take a slightly different approach. The actual task was a search at Agua Caliente (a local park), a riddle from a Sphinx (my older daughter played this role), a race to the Triwizard Cup, and a duel with Voldemort himself (a dad [...]

See “Spring in the Sonoran Desert: Yellow and Peach” for more photographs. We’ve noticed the chollas and saguaros are blooming as well as the prickly pear cacti. Interestingly, each different kind of cholla or prickly pear has a different color flower. They are all beautiful.
